Drinking Water Early 1900s Port Loring Ontario

While out helping Danny Brooks of Port Loring, whom is taking the 911 locations from all the water access properties in our district; I got to chattin’ to him about the old springs that they used many years ago, near the late 1800s.  I do have a map showing most of them actually, dating back to 1923. Any ways, while chattin’ with Dan he said he knew of one, so on our way back home from a long day on the  lake, we decided to see if we could find it. Sure enough in no time flat Danny came up with it, just a short walk from shore.  While there I took a couple pictures of what it looked like. Basically just a wooden barrel sunk into the ground, just outside of where the water runs out of the ground.  The water then is filtered through the sand and stone around it and what ends up in the barrel is nothing but sweet cool water.  This is how the folks got their drinking water while working in and around our area many years ago.  Quite amazing really if you think about it. While standing there the visions of what took place at this watering hole filled my mind.  What they were thinking about while having that cool drink of spring fed water, how old they were, what were they wearing, their troubles, and, well….all kinds of things.  The latitude and longitude for the location is;     45.9001 N -80.0186 W  So if your in the area, why not stop by and have a look for yourself and let history play a bit while you stand an admire what once was. The one picture shows the barrel they used with a lid, the other pictures shows of where the water is running out of the earth. I had a drink from where it was running out and it’s still sweet an cool. The water in the barrel isn’t fit for drinking though as it has been let go. But wouldn’t take much to fix it up to where it would be good. Should also mention here. At these locations you will find the reminisce  of an old wooden dock. Pull your boat up and just walk up the hill about a 100 feet, keeping just a touch to the left going up.  There you will find it.  Also…please look, take pictures, but don’t disturb what once was.

Old Kelcey’s Store In Loring Ontario 1912

Kelcey’s store here in Loring Ontario.  Picture was taken in and around 1912.  Take notice of the old scales, all the can goods.  Huge Deer and Moose heads on the wall above Kelcey.  The Stuffed Hawk, along with the pictures on the wall.  What wouldn’t I give to be able to spend a few days visiting the old store.  But, can’t be done so next best thing is sit down, gaze upon the picture and let it take you to that special place in time.  Enjoy. Old Receipt From Our Garage Here In Port Loring Ontario 1931

Here is a picture of a receipt from 1931 pertaining to Port Loring Garage Owned and Operated by R. W. Brooks many years ago. I know for most it is just a simple receipt. But it is far more than that, take notice of his biggest sellers which is outlined on the page. Everything from boat rentals to selling Hemlock Lumber. Also take note on the phone line on the top of the page. Tells a story itself. Like two long, five short. Stories fill my mind just thinking about it. Amazing really, and you thought it was just a recipe. Click Picture To Enlarge.
