Allergy Seson Upon Us Here In Port Loring

Seems this year that we are experiencing a lot of allergies in our area. Talked to a few folks around town and seems that quite a few have been suffering from runny noses and itchy eyes. Thing is folks, we live in a place that is surrounded by water and trees along with all kinds of plants. Put that together with a bit of heat outside and inside, well lets just say it’s a prefect setting for allergies to strike.  So no need to be running off to the doctors office, as once the body becomes adjusted to things, you will be just fine. One thing you could do, is if you picked the Linden blossoms earlier this summer, like I told you too, you could make yourself a cup of tea from the blossoms,  Which in turn will fix you up within two or three days.  Eyes will clear up and noses will stop running and your immune system will be back up to snuff, which is what you need to fight off any further things that might be lurking around your home.  Nature might contribute to a few problems, but she also gives one the cure, if you know where to look.  Have a great day folks.

Frost Warning For Port Loring & District

Well last night took its toll on a few things in my garden but for most parts it faired not to bad.  Broccoli, Spinach, Leeks, Brussels sprouts, and Beans survived as they always do.  The peppers and tender veggies didn’t do so well.  Anything underground like potatoes, turnips and beats are fine.   The leaves on the beets are still nice, so still lots of salad there for ones meals.  I look forward to them salads every night, let me tell ya.  Tonight though it would be a good idea to cover up things again, as a ridge of high pressure over Ontario will allow for clear skies and light winds over the north eastern portions of the province. As a result, temperatures will drop to the freezing mark with frost developing overnight. Don’t worry though warmer weather is on the way for tomorrow in the high 60s.  My kind of weather.

Choke Cherry Jam Here In Port Loring

Picture Taken Wednesday, September 12 2011

Click Picture To Enlarge.  Well decided this year to make some choke cherry jam, my wife & I and have to say it turned out really good.  Today most folks use pectin for making jam, but here at our home we use, none.  What we do is boil it down till the thickness we require is met and then put in hot jars.  One could also freeze it if you like.  For our recipe you can ask ruth@keepingnotes.com  We also add a few handfuls of wild blue berries to the choke cherries, as it gives it that unique taste and colour.  This year the Robins and other birds have left the choke cherries to ripen, so right now they are a deep dark black colour, which is what one wants for that perfect jar of jam.  Also one should not forget how healthy it is for you, as choke cherries are very high in antitoxins.  With all the other chemicals in our food today it’s amazing how our bodies can still cope.  So… this is one way of eliminating some of those toxins.  The best part is that they are free here in our country for most parts, as they grow pretty well everywhere.  I should also mention here that we use no sugar, just maple syrup and only a  bit of that which in turn, again, gives it a very unique taste.  The picture above shows it boiling down on the stove, first step in arriving at your final destination.  Yes… Mother Nature at her best.

Click Pictures To Enlarge.  Well it’s time to harvest them peppers here in Port Loring. Well should say we have been putting them in the freezer now for the past month.  The more you pick them the more they produce.  I took a picture of our Yellow Bells and Red Shepherd peppers for you to take a look at, one basket of many.  I also took a picture of the end results  when cooked into a tasty soup. In my books there is nothing better than pepper soup, either from the red ones or the yellow.  If you interested in the recipe just give my wife Ruth a call or E-mail her at ruth@keepingnotes.com and she will be more than happy to let you know how to go about making it. Once you had it though,  let me tell you…..you will be hooked.
